India as called 'A Land of Hundred Nations' serves as a home to different religions: Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and others (Parsis, Jews) with 122 languages and their 234 mother tongues(1)and over 650 tribes. With having so many diverse groups inhabiting together, conflicts become almost inevitable. These conflicts have resulted in large destruction of public property amounting to huge loss to economy as well as tremendous human suffering. Moreover, they have also been a major cause of concern for the governments as they pose hurdles in the way of development. This paper aims to analyse the causes and effects of some of the major and recent ethnic conflicts and problems in India. It also analyses the government policies and constitutional provisions as preventive measures to these conflicts in brief.
Three conflicts have attracted the significant media attraction recently: 'Manipur Blockade in last December', 'Instances of Reservation-Demands by Jats and Patidars' and the very recent 'Beef-Controversy'.
